I said, crouching to pick them up.

A young man in a Columbia University baseball jacket knelt down beside me, gathering my documents. He looked to be in his early twenties, with a bright, sunny smile.
"You must be the new visiting scholar, right?" He froze for a second when he saw me, a flash of surprise and admiration in his eyes. "I'm Tristan, a TA in the Art History department."
"Thank you. I'm Sarah."
"You don't look like you're from New York," Tristan said, a disarming smile on his face. He fell into step beside me, easy and confident, like a golden retriever who knows everyone is a potential friend. "I'm guessing... Europe?"
