I'm honestly a bit lost with the Chris and Parker tag lately—maybe the fandom I'm in has a different take, but the plots feel like they're circling the same drain. A lot of it hinges on Parker being this sort of insecure, overthinker type who's convinced Chris is way out of their league, while Chris is oblivious or just terrible at communicating. You get this endless cycle of almost-confessions and missed signals. It's the 'he thinks I don't like him because I teased him too much' trope stretched to its absolute limit.

I used to eat that stuff up, but now it just makes me impatient. There's so much potential for other conflicts! What about them being rivals for the same scholarship, or Parker discovering Chris comes from this super strict family that wouldn't approve? I stumbled on a one-shot where they were paired for a project and had to debate opposing political views—the tension was incredible, way beyond the usual 'do they like me' angst. I wish more writers would gamble on that kind of substantive friction instead of rehashing the same social anxiety loop.

I've seen a real shift over the years. The earliest stuff around 'Infamous' felt tentative, more about filling gaps or imagining 'what if' scenarios between the conduit and his cop brother. It was all brotherly tension and missed connections.

Later, after 'Second Son' dropped, the dynamic got way more charged. Writers started exploring AU settings where they weren't related—college rivals, agent and criminal, that kind of thing. The forbidden aspect from canon gets transformed into something else forbidden but romantic. You get a lot of slow burns where Parker is the straight-laced authority figure constantly one step behind Chris, the chaotic force of nature he's supposed to bring in.

The most popular fics now lean hard into the angst of duty versus desire. Parker wrestling with his orders to capture or kill a man he's come to care for, Chris using his powers in ridiculously flashy ways just to get his attention. It's less about the canon brotherhood and more about crafting a new conflict where their core personalities clash and then mesh.

Finding something good with Chris and Parker is trickier than you'd think. So much of the archive feels either too reliant on established AU templates or goes too dark for my taste.

I ended up really liking 'Commuters' by spectralechoes. It’ s a mundane office AU where they’ re just two guys sharing a bus stop every morning. The tension builds slowly through tiny observations— how Parker always has his earbuds in but never plays music, the way Chris adjusts his bag strap when he’ s about to speak. It’ s quiet and grounded, and the payoff feels earned because the writer bothered to build a whole little world around them first.

Another one that surprised me was 'Blue Hour', which is a crossover with a sci-fi podcast I don’ t even listen to. The author transplants them into this bleak spaceship setting, and their dynamic shifts completely— Parker becomes the pragmatic engineer keeping them alive, while Chris is the idealist trying to preserve their humanity. It works because it explores a power balance you don’ t see often in their usual modern AUs.
