“Rose, I’ll be right back,” I said, squeezing her hand before stepping away. I made my way across the room, weaving between clusters of friends, my heart heavy with concern. As I approached Poppy, I noticed her wavy hair catching the light, yet her eyes bore a different kind of sheen—one that spoke of sorrow.
“Hey, Poppy,” I said gently, leaning against the wall beside her. “You good?”
She turned her gaze toward me, forcing a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Of course! Just enjoying the party.”
