He leaned against the counter next to me, smelling like whiskey and cologne. “You look like you’re trying to forget something bad, sweetheart,” he said, voice rough but not unkind. I laughed, but it came out bitter. “You have no idea.” He signaled the bartender for two more shots. “Name’s Marcus. Those are my boys over there — Tyler, Jake, and Rico. As I looked into the eyes of each hunter I managed to greet them with a nod; the last one in line was Marcus. At twenty-four, Marcus had transformed into a massive man. He was clean-shaven with his thick black hair tied at the nape of his neck and a stubble on his square-cut jaw. He effortlessly levied a huge antelope across his broad back. I complimented him, “Well done, Marcus. You have grown into a man. Your mother would be so proud of you.” Marcus smiled brightly. “Thank you, Alpha. It is all thanks to you and Serena,”

“You really should’ve stayed in your tower, brother.” Damian turned slowly, meeting eyes with the man who carried his own blood but none of his honor. Marcus stood in the doorway, immaculate in a dark coat, his smile calm and cruel. “I see you brought company,” Marcus said, glancing at Elena. “Ah, the loyal wife. Still standing beside the man who destroyed her father’s name. Touching.” “Enough games,” Damian said sharply. “What do you want?” Marcus stepped forward, each stride deliberate. “What I’ve always wanted. The truth out in the open. Your empire in ashes. And my father’s legacy back where it belongs.”

I needed to regroup them and do a rethink before my next line of action. Marcus entered the bedroom where I was as he looked at me while I was brooding sadly. We reached the address fast. It was a small cabin hidden in the woods. The door was open. We went inside with our guns ready. Marcus was on the floor. He was bleeding badly from his side. His face was pale and he could barely lift his head. When he saw us he tried to smile but it came out weak. “You came,” he said. His voice was rough. “I didn’t think you would.” Damien knelt beside him. “Who did this?”

A thick grey cloud filled the trees, making it hard to see anything. Noah turned around fast. He forgot about Jaxon. He forgot about the helicopter. He rushed back to where Marcus was lying in the dirt. Marcus was not dead. The tough assassin groaned loudly and dragged his bleeding body up from the mud. His black shirt was completely soaked in dark red blood. He looked pale, but his grey eyes were wide open and totally focused. “Marcus,” Noah whispered, dropping to his knees next to him. He pressed his hands gently against Marcus’s chest. “I am here. I have you.”
