“It’s not her fault, I waited until the lights were out and snuck out.” Back at home. Philip picked up the phone from the table and pressed the link in the message. As the video began, he clenched his fists over and over. “Maddy.” “Yes.” “Tell me now, do you believe that I would go from our bed into another woman’s?” “I don’t know!” “Please Maddy, I know you are still hurting but remember what I said about trusting me.” Maddy replayed all the times he asked her to trust him, he never let her down. “I trust you. If you said it was not you, I will believe you.”

she says, “they don’t know how to neutralize you anymore.” That should feel like victory. It doesn’t. It feels like exposure. Later that night, lying awake, I think about something that’s been bothering me for days. This alliance—this adjacency—it works because it resists ownership. But what happens when someone breaks that trust? When someone consolidates quietly? When ambition finds a way to disguise itself as care? I text him. We’re building something that can’t be enforced. He replies quickly. Then it has to be practiced. I close my eyes.

His eyes met mine, unguarded for once, he didn't hold anything back, there was no mask, it was Just a man offering something he didn’t know how to name. Trust, or maybe… absolution. I closed the book carefully, the pages rustling like wind through old trees, I clutched it to my chest. This was no longer just history, it was a weapon, it was a map to my rebirth.

“How can I not? Our engagement was supposed to be a political move, not a death sentence.” He exhaled slowly. “Welcome to my world.” I looked up at him. “And what world is that?” His eyes met mine, dark and unreadable. “One where trust gets you killed.” A shiver ran down my spine. Damian Volkov was still a mystery to me. Cold, ruthless, unreadable. But tonight, we were bound by one undeniable truth. If we wanted to survive, we had no choice but to trust each other. When we reach the grave from before, I stop and release his hand. It falls to his side. I stare at the grave and avoid his face. “You were right when you said I'm selfish.” I start. “I don't know how to trust. But my mournful ululation wasn't because of the insincerity of his words but because I was trying to find even a trace of truthfulness in his voice. I wanted to drown in the comfort of his hold, I wanted to place my lips on his to show that I appreciated his comforting words, I wanted to close my eyes and let my heart call out to him because it believed in the words he said. But I couldn't, because once upon a time, the man before me broke my very being, and now I can't trust him. Just as I can't trust anyone, not even the air I breathe. ~END OF FLASHBACK~

This place taught me that life was not fairy-tale rather it was a battlefield where people needed only one chance to defeat you, to crash you under their feet mercilessly. This place was proof of my tears, sorrow, pain and regret of trusting the wrong person. Trust Trust which in itself was a guarantee that even if the whole world stood against us, the person who had trust for us will turn against the whole world for us.
