Ne trouvant plus d'échappatoire, Chloé Dumont a donc passé un accord avec la mère de Lucien Bernard. Elle a fini par épouser Lucien. Pendant trois ans de mariage, Chloé était douce, obéissante, supportait tout sans jamais se plaindre. Elle est allée même jusqu'à aider Lucien — paralysé des jambes et au caractère explosif — à se remettre debout. Elle pensait naïvement qu'ils pourraient continuer à vivre ensemble, malgré tout. Mais c'était sans compter sur le retour de Jeanne Laurent, la femme qu'il avait toujours aimée. Par la suite, il a inventé un déplacement professionnel… alors qu'il emmenait Jeanne à un concert. Dégage, ou je porte plainte pour harcèlement sexuel ! » ... Chloé déménageait dans un nouvel appartement et faisait la connaissance d'un voisin calme et bienveillant. Cet homme s'appelait Xavier Marchand. Il lui apprenait à faire confiance, à s'appuyer sur quelqu'un. Avec lui, elle devenait presque une enfant qu'on protège. À chaque obstacle, il était là, toujours présent, solide comme un roc. Leurs rendez-vous, ses déclarations, la demande en mariage, même les moindres détails du mariage… Xavier s'en occupait, tout était pensé pour elle.
