I had earned my stripes in the service, and all the money the army gave me, I had put on that card. I wanted to give Sheila a better life. It turned out that it was all just wishful thinking on my part. On the day of the big party, the restaurant was packed with relatives. I sat by myself, texting back and forth with my army buddies.

" Silently, I looked at her angry expression. "He's gone—gone with the baby." The nurse covered her mouth, looking apologetic. "I'm sorry." I smiled and shook my head, but my gaze fell on Chloe Bennett's latest social media post. In it was a man with a cigarette between his lips. He was shirtless, his sculpted abs illuminated under dim lighting. His head was lowered, one hand unbuckling his belt—impatient, almost desperate. The party was incredible. A lot of music, food, drinks and lively talks. Everyone was really excited to meet new people and with the idea of forming a bigger pack.
