The pulse hit her palm and she felt it move through her entire body, through the convergence, through the pack bond, through Thornfield's territory from boundary stone to boundary stone and she held it.
Behind her sixty three wolves gasped simultaneously.
The river went still.
And then, from somewhere below the valley floor, a sound began. Not a sound exactly the wrong word, no human language had the right word. A resonance. A frequency. Something the body felt rather than heard, moving up through the earth like a tide coming in, and coming in, and coming in.
The Underneath were waking.
