The Pattern was balanced. The great wounds are healed. We are just… living in the epilogue. We are curators of a finished museum." Her words found a worrying purchase in many hearts. "The Unwritten don't want silence," Fen observed, listening to the echoes of their meetings. "They want… uncertainty. They are bored."

Other things have happened here, however. Strange things. Unexplainable things. Like average people quitting their jobs mid-shift for no reason and vanishing into thin air. Mothers removing their children from school with no warning and taking off for parts unknown, entire families sneaking away into the night, clergy and veteran teachers resigning their posts unannounced, experienced hunters disappearing into the forests never to be seen again.

I really thank God because I will never again be afraid of trees or going to sleep. ++++++++++++++ I couldn’t tell the story of Nikki’s experience to just anyone because a lot of people say that maybe it was all just a dream and that it was just the imagination of a girl who wanted to just go along with a fad. But in the end, I am sharing it here because there really are things in this world that cannot be explained away as dreams or figments of the imagination. And if those stories hold any truth, then maybe, just maybe, they can help us figure out what the hell is going on now.” Erica scoffed, clearly not convinced. “So now you’re saying that if we just dig around in these old stories, we’ll find some magical solution to what’s happening? You really think that’s going to work?”
