I said, my voice low, almost pleading, “I hope he doesn’t have a girlfriend in this college. Or someone who’s… obsessed with him.” She went quiet. Too quiet. That alone made my stomach twist. “Well,” she said slowly, sitting up fully now, “that’s actually why I came here.” My heart skipped. “Why?” She looked at me with an expression that wasn’t playful or teasing anymore. I had to leave for Chicago this evening for an orientation visit at the university, as that's where I'll be going next year. “Trust me, you'll love college life,” she said. Of course, she knew. She was already done with university. “I’m sure…” I cleared my throat, clearly not interested in taking the conversation further. “Can we talk?” I turned to Anthony, who seemed to be now on his phone. He woke up before me this morning, came to bed late last night, and avoided me throughout breakfast, but my time was going. “Anthony.” “Yes, Niki?” “Your girlfriend…” She used her eyes. Mhm, now she was acting like a relationship saver when she was the reason it was breaking.

When the rain started to fall steadily from the sunless sky, tapping a metrical rhythm on Will’s car, Una wished she hadn’t said yes to him when he invited her to his office party. "I thought about going to college for psychology or something. My friends and I actually planned to go to this university together—Long Range University. It’s in New York." I frown, thinking.
