It was already 10:00 pm by the time Curtis carried Lilac back home. He had been trying to put Lilac to sleep, but she refused to sleep, fearing that he would leave right after. She lay on the bed, tugging at his hand, asking him for a bedtime story. Curtis had no choice but to listen to her. Margot walked into the room and saw that the duo were still talking. She reminded them, "It's getting late. You need to sleep soon. Do you want to sleep with Daddy or Mommy, Lilac?"

The snore cut off, his voice low and drowsy. "Babe," he murmured, tugging her gently back to him. The sudden flare of light blinded her. She squinted against it, staring at him. "Is this how this room is usually dark?" she asked breathlessly. "No," Trent's lips curved in a faint smile, "it's dark because it's the middle of the night." "Middle of the night?" Zora shot upright, her voice sharp with panic. She scrambled off the bed, bare feet hitting the floor.

He dropped his phone to the bedside and laid back to the bed. Cade finally drifted to sleep in between the thoughts that flooded his night since he laid down to sleep. He was woken up by someone banging on his door. "Who is that? This early?" he asked himself glancing at the clock and discovering he had overslept. He wanted to get back to exercising but he felt too tired to meet up with that schedule that morning.

Grandma focuses, "I'll try to remember." After dinner, I meticulously clean my bedroom. I smooth out my comforter, straighten my pillows, light a candle so it smells like vanilla. Carolina and I work in tandem to get him in bed, and I listen to her tell him a bedtime story. It's the latest in an apparent series, which seems to involve the misadventures of his favorite toys.

Titan settled down at my feet as I locked the door and turned off the porch light. Now, alone, I began my bedtime routine. I kicked off my shoes and slipped out of my dress.
