... My boss gasped, "You're quitting?" His surprise was reasonable since I had just led the team to nail a big project. A promotion and raise were on the horizon. "Yeah, I am," I replied calmly. "Well then, I respect your choice. Is it marriage?" he said. I shook my head and walked out. There was no marriage, just an empty promise that kept me waiting infinitely. Yesterday, I stumbled across Desmond Maynard's stash of love letters. Each one was carefully preserved in a box with moisture-proof packets.

"Not on your life!" She yelled before she knew it, spurred by her swelling hatred. Her rationality told her she could afford to lie—to keep him in line, so that he would let her go. However, her rationality had no control as soon as she heard him. And words spoken without hesitation hurt the most, as they reflected one's most earnest thoughts. How could Henry accept the realization that Tina really hated him so much that she refused to even give him another chance? She used to obsess over him so much, but now she refused to let him into her heart at all?

“Give it all to me. Even what you have at the back.” “I’m not doing that.” “Why not? I’m a customer…” “Why are you here?” She hated it that there was nobody left in the store. It was awkward. “Well… I wanted to see you.” “You wanted to see me? Really?” She couldn’t believe this man. “Yes really. Why is that hard to believe?” “Why? Why do you want to see me?”

His voice was quiet, but there was something beneath it—something deeper. A question that wasn’t just a question. My breath hitched. The haze of warmth and comfort shattered instantly, replaced by an unbearable weight in my chest. I wasn’t sure what I had expected him to say, but it wasn’t that. I felt him waiting. I parted my lips, trying to form a response, but nothing came out. How could I possibly explain it? There were reasons—reasons that I wasn’t sure I was ready to share. Reasons that felt too personal. Too peculiar.

More like something opening. I don’t move away. I don’t move forward. I just stay. His voice drops lower. “There are things I haven’t said yet,” he says. I wait. I don’t rush him. “I don’t speak easily,” he says. “Not about myself. Not about what I feel.” His eyes don’t waver. “But I know this. You are not here by accident. And I don’t let people close to me unless there is a reason. Real reason.”
