The moon goddess must be really smiling above us. After two years of marriage, I became pregnant again. This time I was happy because my mate was with me. We waited for our bungle of joy. Finally, the goddess blessed us with a beautiful daughter. She completed our life.

Shama sat beneath the moonlit sky, the cool breeze caressing her skin. She gazed up at the full moon, its silvery glow illuminating the vast expanse of the night sky. Myriad stars twinkled around it, like diamonds scattered on black velvet. Shama wondered which celestial body she most resembled: the lone moon, shining brightly in the darkness, or the countless unknown stars, twinkling beside it, their light unseen by most.

The perimeter lights ran in a chain along the north wall and bent around the west corner and the gap between them. At midnight the grounds were still. At twelve-eleven they weren't. Two figures moved through the exact gap with deliberateness like they had memorised where the light stopped. They weren’t running; rather they were walking, low and fast, following the line of the treeline along the north edge where the shadow was deepest.

All of them were the living memory of what this pack is. The space between the moons. She had read about it in the first notebook, the first year Ivory Voss was in the territory. The space between the moons is not nothing. It is, in fact, where we live. She had read it many times. She understood it now in the way she understood things that had been true before she named them. The space between the moons was not the dramatic arc. The space between the moons was not the peak of the thing or the arrival of the thing or the naming of the thing.

What’s all this preparation for?” Dryann wiped sweat from his brow. “Apparently, there’s a full moon festival tonight. Perfect timing for fun, huh?” Maxton’s stomach knotted. A full moon. His heart fluttered uneasily.

The Moon Festival was never meant for people like me. All around the clearing, wolves danced and laughed, their faces painted with silver crescents, clothes glowing with threads woven under moonlight. Lanterns floated overhead, their warm gold light casting shifting shadows on the stones below. The ancient pines swayed, whispering old prayers to the Moon Goddess. I stood at the edge of it all, half-hidden beneath the gnarled limbs of a hollow pine. My hands were clenched inside the sleeves of my simple robe—undyed, unadorned. I wasn’t dressed to be seen.

Tonight, its grey walls are bathed in the soft shimmer of bistro lights strung across the grounds. But the brightest light of all is the one above us—the full moon, hanging clear and silver in the sky. A formal event beneath a full moon… with a werewolf. It feels almost too much like a fairytale. And yet, I can’t ignore what the stories say about werewolves on nights like this.

Fiona’s POV They were finally here. Their energy was drained, and I was satisfied with that. Everything had been so simple, so logical. Of course, it had—we had planned everything meticulously, leaving no room for mistakes. I was certain of our success. Everything was in place for the ritual to proceed. Ester and Leena had already prepared everything at our camp; now, all that remained was waiting for the right moment. For both wolves and witches, the full moon is a source of power. And since this mutt was a hybrid, the moonlight would be at its peak during the full moon—the strongest possible time to strip her of her abilities.

Did you know that Jupiter has 79 moons?” Aaron feigned surprise, his expression playful. “Seventy-nine? That’s incredible. I don’t think I could remember all their names.” Caleb laughed, his earlier hesitance melting away.
