Heavy drapes blocked the windows, candles provided the only light, and the long table was covered with open books, loose papers, and what looked disturbingly like medical journals from the nineteenth century. She looked up as we entered, and I noticed for the first time that she seemed more alive than either David or me; energized, almost luminous in the candlelight. “Good. You’re both here.” She gestured to the chairs across from her. “Sit. Suddenly, the freezing air warmed up just a fraction as Elena materialized from the shadows behind the armchair. The ancient vampire initially remained silent. Her piercing silver eyes examined Maya, instantly sensing the significant change in her heartbeat. Elena’s heightened senses detected the faint, moist scent of the northern woods on Maya’s jacket, combined with the sharp, salty smell of dried tears.

Elena's screams of pain and angry roars from Mila bounce off the prison walls, making anyone who hears shudder in fear, while Liam doesn't have time to save Elena's life, because a moment later, the elder's head has rolled on the dirty prison floor. Dead. Elena just died in a way she never expected and in a place she had never thought of before. Several guards who heard the screams and roars that were like monsters immediately came to the prison and witnessed how the elder had died and her headless body fell to the ground as Mila let go of the lifeless body.
