When it ran down my face I blinked hard, specks on my lashes that stuck like shame.
The blonde one clapped, delighted, as if I were an animal they’d dressed for show. Veronica leaned forward, her red robe folding like a smile. There was no warmth in her eyes, only the calculation of someone assessing a toy.
“It suits you,” Veronica said. “Sticky and sweet. Men like the sell of it.” There was a tone of testing in it, and a cruel pleasure. “You should be grateful, you’ll be remembered.”
“You think Xander’s taste is that trivial?” I retorted, bitter even as the chocolate ran into the hollow of my collarbone and stained the plain dress. The words sounded small in the room, but they were mine.
