Blushing at the recollection, I let those thoughts drift away as I immersed myself in the rows of books, each one promising a new adventure. My fingers brushed against the spine of a particular volume that had captivated me on that enchanting day. Xavier's favorite – ‘The Legend of the Arctic Wolf.’ Although I had heard the tale countless times from him, I yearned to delve into its pages and uncover more on my own. The worn cover felt comforting in my hands as I opened it, eager to lose myself in the mythical tale, or should I say a reality directly linked to me.

He’d leaned against the railing, a beer in hand, staring out at the vast, endless water when he saw her. Xavier stepped out onto the deck for some air, the cold bite of the ocean breeze cutting through the lingering heat from the crowded party hall. The beer bottle dangled loosely in his fingers as he stared out at the endless stretch of dark water. He was drunk—just drunk enough for the world to feel blurry, but not enough to miss the faint sound of footsteps or the distant voice filtering through the stillness. That’s when he saw her.

His brown eye turned red in an instance, causing my breath to hitch. His hand tightened around my jaw slightly, his face lowering against mine. I had no idea what made me look down at his chest at this time but a gasp escaped me at what I saw. “What is this?” I questioned, my fingers trailing across the black veins that spread through the length of his chest. Some of them actively pulsating as if they had a life of their own. Xavier withdrew from me quickly, his body tense. “It’s nothing.” He let out gruffly, his back turned to me.

Shouldn’t he be the one here explaining himself? Xavier lays down next to her and stares out into the water and with reluctance says, ‘They had a connection, just like the one you and I had. Xillon and I reacted somewhat as you have. But they have had no interactions with each other since the day they met. Until yesterday when Finley got knocked out. Wasn’t the best experience being the ones to carry him to the doctor, with Annalise fussing over him the whole way. Thought to be our mate until now. Like you, we are now somewhat perplexed.’

A moment before Einar pushes forward I look at Xander. “What is it?” Einar pushes the shift but Xander answers me in the mind link. ‘Vampires!’

The harsh orange glow that had lived under his skin for nine volumes was gone, leaving only the quiet, permanent gray map of his charcoal heart. He reached down, his calloused fingers brushing a splash of the ink-sea from the hull. It didn't stain his skin; it ran off his knuckles like pure, heavy water, leaving behind a faint scent of cedar and old library shelves.

I looked like a ghost who had crashed a ball she didn’t belong at. Liam was pacing again, his hands running through his hair every few seconds, muttering things I couldn’t make out. Every once in a while, he’d stop and glance at me like he wanted to say something but didn’t trust himself to. Xves hadn’t moved from where he stood — a few feet away, near the columns, shadows carving sharp lines across his face. His shirt was torn near the shoulder, streaked with a faint smear of blood. He looked dangerous like that — calm and unreadable, but coiled tight under the skin.

Even Virex stood at a distance, his hand on the hilt of his blade. “His pulse is off the charts,” Marrow growled, trying to hold Xander’s shoulders. “He’s not coming back. He’s sinking into the Great Dark.” Suddenly, Xander’s eyes snapped open. They weren't golden anymore. They were a terrifying, molten crimson, swirling with flecks of black iron. A sound erupted from his throat that wasn't a growl or a howl - it was the sound of a tectonic plate snapping.
