Giving up on sleep, I threw off the blanket, grabbed an empty glass, and padded downstairs barefoot to get some water. When I reached the bottom of the stairs, I noticed a warm sliver of light spilling out from the kitchen doorway. I stepped into the archway and stopped. Xavier was sitting at the marble island alone, a single low lamp turned on behind him, reading through a thick hardcover book. He had his reading glasses on, his dark hair slightly messy from running his hands through it. Neither of us expected the other to be up. "Can't sleep?" I asked softly, stepping inside.

But the asset had started to talk to him. Not about the Family, or the threats, or the Don's cruel machade. She spoke of her sketches, the smell of the sea, and the books she loved. ​"Do you ever read, Xavier?" she asked one afternoon, curled on the window seat with a tattered copy of a book of poetry. ​He kept his gaze fixed on the double doors. "Yes, Ma'am. Technical manuals, Operational reports, Satellite telemetry." ​Alessia laughed a bright, warm, entirely unexpected sound that made something inside Xavier's chest hitch.

They were disappointed by the unexpected turn of events, and their desires remained unsatisfied. A crewman approached Xavier, gently extending a book that the mysterious author had borrowed the night before. Xavier's interest was immediately sparked as he opened the book, his gaze drawn directly to a marked page that held a surprise. As his gaze settled on the paper, Xavier was overcome with awe. At the very beginning of the specified page, there was a note written by the enigmatic author himself. It was a private message, intended just for Xavier, a reader who adored the author's work.

His attention went back to the screen and I turned mine to his book shelf to look for something to read. Vampires. Werewolfs. Romance. Teen Fiction. Mystery. Thriller. Historical.
