“Forsake your selfish endeavors! The covenant shall be made to the Coven, not to oneself! The Goddess. The Great Mother. A sacred vow that can never be broken.” The pages are delicate and thin. I carefully turn the page to see what wisdoms await me. A soft knock on the door snaps me out of my thoughts. I quickly hide the book as I hear the lock begin to turn.

Amor, the three priests and the priestess were standing in front of me behind the flames to be the witness of the vow, along with the pack public, the royal family, and the other nobility. “I will always use my powers to protect, preserve, and help ‘others’ and their rights. His scent and strong body made my whole being squirm to get much closer to him. Suddenly, I was hit with a headache, my body shivering violently as I struggled to hold on to my fading consciousness. I vow to be a mother figure to your child and to fulfill my duties as your wife, for as long as this union shall bind us.” The words taste like lies on my tongue. But I say them anyway. When I finish, I force myself to meet his gaze. Alonso’s face remains impassive, but something flickers in his eyes something too fleeting to grasp.

“I, Chandler Andrew Parker take you Millie Wilson as my wife, my partner in life and my one true love. I will cherish you for the rest of my life, for better or for worse… till death do us part.” After Chandler placed the ring on her finger, it was her time to say her vow. “I, Millie Wilson take you Chandler Andrew Parker to be my husband…” She paused, swallowing hard and looking at Chandler. Together, we will grow stronger every day.” Across the circle, Devon’s voice trembled but was steady. “Carolina, I vow to be patient, to listen, and to earn your trust every day. I am grateful for you.”

Lady Senna and the armored man flanked him like twin pillars of judgment, their expressions carved from ice. “This is your final trial,” Lady Senna said. Her voice carried through the hollow space, echoing strangely off the stripped walls. It wasn’t loud — it didn’t need to be. It was heavy, each word falling like a stone into my gut. “It is not a test of skill. Or courage. Or power. It is a binding.” My mouth tasted like ash. I tried to swallow, but it stuck in my throat. “You will each step forward,” she went on, her eyes sweeping over us. “You will place your hand upon the book and speak your vow of loyalty. Of service. Of self. And this book will take your words and make them truth.”

She doesn’t understand how much that feeds me. The priest drones about love, faith, eternal bonds. I hear none of it. I only watch Eve, soaking in the fury radiating from her. She has no smile for me, no softness. And yet she is magnificent. When prompted, I answer without hesitation. “I will.” My voice cuts through the cathedral like glass. The vows continue. The priest intones the lines I insisted on, relics of an older time. To love, honor, and obey. Not cherish. Cherish is for weak men. Obey is for me.
