He stared at her for half a second, then laughed. A deep, easy laugh that made the room feel a little less intimidating. He tugged her closer, his hand settling at the small of her back. “Sit down, Lauren,” he said, his voice thick with amusement. He pulled out the chair beside his own and waited. When she sank into it, she felt like a child seated on a throne. He took his seat at the head of the table, looking perfectly at home.
Vivian entered quietly, as if she had been waiting for permission. She began opening the dishes, one by one.
