Then the red glow inside the broken ring flared brighter. “The last gate waits below.” Silence followed, heavy and absolute. Ryan’s jaw tightened. “Who are you?” For the first time, the voice answered him directly. “The ones before your kingdoms called me Keeper.” The temperature dropped instantly afterward. The glow faded slightly, but the staircase below remained open, waiting.

Marissa warned. "I'm sorry," I apologized, that was the only thing I could do. "Just like Raya, I will make sure you go to hell," Marissa spat on the floor and walked away. A voice that carried the weight of darkness itself. “Sure,” the entity purred through Raya’s lips. “I’m always up for a little… chit-chat.”

I couldn't hold back the sob that escaped me as I gripped her hand, terrified that if I let go, this might somehow turn out to be a hallucination. "Hey, ssssh, calm down, Raya," Riya whispered. Her voice was raspy, thin from disuse, but it was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. She reached out with her free hand, her fingers weakly stroking my hair, trying to anchor me. "I’m much better now. Just a little weak, but I'm fine. I promise."
