He pinned me to the ground, his claws at my throat. I was about to give up, but then I heard a familiar voice. "Let her go!" it said. I looked up, and I saw Raya standing over us, her eyes blazing. "You don't want to do this," she said. "This is not the way of the pack."

I couldn't hold back the sob that escaped me as I gripped her hand, terrified that if I let go, this might somehow turn out to be a hallucination. "Hey, ssssh, calm down, Raya," Riya whispered. Her voice was raspy, thin from disuse, but it was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. She reached out with her free hand, her fingers weakly stroking my hair, trying to anchor me.
