Just a symbol on the cover. A crescent moon wrapped around a broken crown. The same symbol that burns on Lyra's wrist. I take the book off the shelf. It is heavier than it looks. I carry it to the small table in the center of the room and open it. The pages are not paper. They are vellum. Treated with silver dust and moonflower oil. The words are written in blood ink. She slowly ran her fingertips along the embossed, Latin letters. They looked and felt ancient. The entire page was so beautifully and intricately designed, and she marveled at the intricate colors along the paper’s edges. Back then, she realized, books were made to be works of art in and of themselves.

I opened it and found myself entering a smaller version of the library downstairs. There was no swirling staircase going up, up, up, rather walls full of books, some of which were only accessible via the sliding ladder off to the side. With my stomach full and heart heavy, I waltzed over to one of the shelves and scanned them, intending to pick a book at random. One in particular drew my eye. With lack of better things to do, I carefully climbed down the ladder and went to the kitchen to get a bowl of water and a handful of towels. There were some books with leather covers that would need a damp towel and others were paperbacks that'd just require dusting. I got to work quickly, cleaning and dusting my way through until I came across a book titled, "The Curse of Vlod." The cover was leather and the sides were embedded with intricate silver swirling, making it look like something out of a fairy tale. I immediately opened it and was so relieved it was written in English. I quickly stepped down from the ladder and sat against the wall, going through the pages.
