Leo asked. I thought about the fire that had broken through my binding, the ancient fury that had opened its eyes inside me and refused to be extinguished. I thought about Marcus, out there somewhere, still burning with whatever twisted rage drove him, and about how different that kind of fire was from what I wanted to build here. "Ember House," I said slowly, testing the words. "Because an ember isn't the destructive part of a fire. It's what's left after everything burns down — small, but still warm. Still alive. Still capable of starting something new if you're patient with it."

Ember looks at me across the kitchen, sweet potato on her face, and reaches for me with both hands. I cross the room and lift her from the chair and she grabs my braid with one fist and examines it with great seriousness, because Ember approaches everything with great seriousness, which she gets from both of us and which means she is going to be absolutely formidable in approximately seventeen years. "Hello," I tell her. She looks at me with silver-flecked eyes, releases my braid, and puts her hand flat against my cheek the way she sometimes does—the small, deliberate gesture of someone who is learning what touch means and choosing to use it.

My fingers uncurled from the dirt, and the pain vanished—replaced by a power so fierce, so pure, it felt like starlight coursing through my veins. “Finally,” Ember’s voice rumbled from my throat, but it wasn’t my voice. It was deeper, firmer, carrying a thousand echoes of lives long gone. “You’ve caused enough destruction, Kael.” Kael’s eyes widened as the air shifted. “No…” he whispered, stumbling back. “That’s not possible—” “Oh, it’s very possible.” Ember smiled through me, and even I could feel how cold it was. “You forget, boy… I am not merely inside her. I am her.”

I walked to Jaime's boat and knocked three times. "I was wondering when I'd see your face again. Looks like that pearl worked in your favor." He smirked at me. It seems that I'll never surprise him when I come here. "Tell me what I can do for you." "I need a gift for Ember. Her birthday is in a couple of days. Got anything that will help her with her grief?" I was quick to get down to business. I want to get back to Ember before she realizes I am gone. "I have something, but it'll cost you a day of your life." He smirked. I narrowed my eyes at him.

EMBER After a night of tossing and turning, I arrived at the office on Friday morning wearing sunglasses almost as big as my head and carrying a coffee even bigger. I got the biggest, strongest cup I could find, but I was still running on fumes. Two nights of little sleep in a row made Ember a very dull girl. A very dull girl who still hadn’t heard from her boyfriend, even though it’d been more than twelve hours since he had arrived at the office and hopefully found and talked to his dad on the roof.

Ember Who am I? She asked. " I'm Ember Maze. Human woman. Born and raised in Tallahassee. My parents are human. I'm pretty sure I am too, though I have never started to exhibit powers until I came into contact with all four of my mates ", I told her. "That is because there is more to you than meets the eye, Ember" she says. Yea sure there is.

EMBER Ember was supposedly in an engagement or contract or deal, something similar to any of that, with Zaire Langston Hughes. Even though it wasn't much, it still felt far fetched. It wasn't a lie that Ember sometimes refused to believe something even happened between them or he could even be attracted to someone like her. It all felt like a dream or just her imagination, hallucination, if that made sense. But it was there. Even though, she couldn't say it out loud or even pretend she cared even a little about it, it was there.

I need to make a plan. What do I do now Emerald? I reach out to her. She whimpers. She’s been pretty sulky ever since I rejected Wesley. She replies by flashing me the image of those kind brown eyes again. Those aren’t Wesley’s eyes? I guess I’ll find out in about a week when Emerald can help me see. Ash’s POV

Ember said to Kali, then turned towards June, “and you too. If you are free, you can give me a call. We can make plans and find a place to visit or ways to pass the time.” “You don’t need to get involved in everyone’s life, Em.” “Vanna enough.” His father chided pleasantly, but his tone was firm. “It’s alright, dad.” Ember waved off his concern and chuckled as she took a sip of her wine. “I usually get ahead of myself.” “Don’t apologize on my account.” June flashed a quick smile. “I am new here, and the only person I know right now is my sister, at least until school officially begins. It would be great to have a new friend.”
