The look carried the quality of immediate understanding—not the slow arrival at comprehension but the instantaneous recognition that came from having been waiting for something without naming the waiting. He was still reading, the book nearly finished now, and I was sitting on the couch with my knees pulled up to my chest, waiting. I didn't know what I was waiting for anymore. An explosion. A confrontation. Some kind of release from the terrible pressure of his silence. But it didn't come. He just kept turning pages, and I just kept watching him, and the night stretched on forever. Is this my new life now??
