It wasn't supposed to matter, but the sight of his crest and mark, sent an intense amount of pain spreading in my chest.

Only Lyra seemed unaffected, her steps light and precise. The grove opened onto a chasm spanned by a narrow rope bridge. Below, mist obscured whatever drop awaited. A wooden plaque read: "Speak a truth to cross. Speak a lie and fall." Pipa scoffed. "Child's play." She stepped onto the bridge. "I am Pipa Valen, heir to House Valen." The bridge held. One by one, the others followed with simple declarations: "I am Alira Dain." "I am Jessa Brinwall."
