He touched the portal, but was prevented from crossing by the celestial dog that was taking possession of his body more and more every day. He screamed for her name, he tried to use his magic to convince her to cross against him, and when she put her hand on the portal, he was abruptly dragged by legs that no longer seemed to be hers. The world turned when the celestial dog took over Vraxlon's eyes and mind. Only his heart was still intact. Everything else was corrupted. Until the moment he was allowed to leave.

As I opened the door, I saw Karex, who was about to enter, but froze when she saw me. “What the hell are you doing here?” she snapped. I gave her a slow, amused smile. “What do you think?” Her eyes widened. “You-you spent the night here?” I shrugged. “Looks like it.” She looked like she might blow up any second. “Stay away from Terran. He belongs to me.” "Oh? That’s funny," I mused, crossing my arms. "Because I don’t recall seeing his name stamped on your forehead." Karex’s lip curled. "He will claim me soon.”

Mine were welling with tears that threatened to fall and I could have sworn his were glistening too as he smiled back at me. Then, cupping my face in his hands, he spoke the words I’d always wanted to hear but never dreamed I would. “I, Finnick Cross, Beta of the Crimson Moon pack, accept you, Sarah Woods, of the RedWoods Pack, as my Goddess-given mate.” He poured all his emotions into those words. Hope, joy, want, need, and love. Most definitely love. Finnick Cross loved me and in that moment, I felt whole for the first time in my life. I couldn’t wait to say those words back to him and I hoped my acceptance would make him feel even a fraction as happy as his made me.

Gunner finally answered. My chest tightened so painfully I could barely draw breath. "Why?" I demanded, fighting to keep my tone casual, fighting to hide the devastation clawing at my throat. "She is barely twenty-two, Gunner." Gunner leaned back in the chair, looking away from me. He stared out the window, into the pitch-black night. "Because look around you, Havoc." Gunner said grimly, gesturing to the ruined office. "Look at this mess. The situation here is completely fubar. War is coming, and it's going to be bloody. I couldn't keep her here. I couldn't have her walking these halls while we got targets painted on our backs."

"The Apostles... they aren't attacking us. They’re using the global stabilization frequency you just established as a back-door! They’re slaving the minds of every wolf you just saved!" I looked at the courtyard through the shattered viewports. Marek, the Alpha of the Southern Cross—the man who had knelt to Leo only hours ago—was standing at the head of a new phalanx. But his eyes weren't gold anymore. They were voids of silver-gray light, his neck clicking with that mechanical, rhythmic stutter. The people I saved were now the ones holding the scythe.

Its tentacles reached for Alex’s belly. The child kicked violently. The ship shuddered. Rebellion had followed them aboard human fighters who had boarded during the chaos. At last, he turned fully, his expression as dark as the overcast morning. "Did you finish reading it?" I hesitated. "No."
