The rest of the family looked on with interest, awaiting the climactic final act of my inevitable failure. Let them wait. For the truth was, the Four Titans had belonged to me since long before tonight. After all, I had built their empire up from nothing myself, hidden behind a thousand fronts and facades. This challenge was mine to conquer. And conquer it I would, when the time came to play my masterstroke. Until then, the game was afoot. What fun.

It crawled. "Target... active..." it skipped. It was dragging itself toward me. I reached for my railgun. It was gone, lost in the fall. I reached for my sidearm. The holster was empty. I had my knife. An obsidian blade, six inches long. The Titan was ten feet away. It was leaking violet fluid that hissed where it touched the star-metal. "You... don't... quit," I murmured. "Mission... parameters... absolute," the Titan said.

Their heads were sensor clusters glowing with a singular red eye. Their right arms ended in rotary cannons. Their left arms were anti-riot shock prods, crackling with enough electricity to jumpstart a city. "Titans!" Ben screamed, his voice muffled by the mask. "We can't fight those! Small arms are useless!" The Titans stepped onto the maintenance rails. They didn't need to walk the bridge; they had magnetic clamps on their boots. They walked heavily along the walls, flanking the team, their cannons spinning up with a sound like tearing canvas.

"If we destroy that core..." "The Titan will fall." The problem was obvious. The glowing core lay beneath layers of nearly indestructible crystal armor.
