“Alphas are alphas. The highest authority in the pack. We only take orders from the council.” “No wonder Waylen is so bossy. He never listens to anyone,” she muttered. She was wrong about that. Mates always listened to each other, but kudos to him for making her believe the opposite, that he had all the power. “What’s the name of your pack?” “Bloodmoon.” “Waylen’s?” “Shadowclaw.” “Nice names. What is the inspiration? I laughed. “No idea.” My car slowly came to a stop in front of her apartment complex. She unclipped her seatbelt and pointed at my chest. “Wait here. I’ll be right back.”

There was some kind of tattoo peeking out. My eyes went to his hair and they were silvery white with a braid in them, and fell to his broad shoulders. It was like he was a direct descendent of the Moon goddess; Selene. The braid indicated he was from the Warbringer Clan. It was an ancient clan which produced some of the strongest warriors our world had seen. The Lycans were part of this clan and they always kept long hair and wore braids. Each braid in their hair indicated something personal. Could be a special victory, their mate or lover, or it could be the birth of their child. Their braids were significant and he only had one in his hair and I wondered what it meant.

I speak up, “Yeah, Kaia’s codename is Canary and Sinclair’s codename is Sin, short for her actual name.” “Oh.” Adrian said quietly. I don’t know what that is about, but I brush it off, because it’s time to start the ceremony. I mind link all warriors to come to the training facility and all ranked members need to report as well. Which earned a reply from my mother saying to watch my tone. I chuckled and waited as everyone started filing in. After a little bit I see Mom, Dad and Thalia all walking down the middle and onto the stage. I smile at her and take her hand to join me. My folks are standing behind me, and I make a small speech to the warriors.

replied the clan chief with a loud laugh. "Hahahaha! That's for sure, clan chief. If he is even weaker than us, why should we, who are strong, be loyal to him? Hahaha!" One of the elders there laughed along with the tiger clan chief. Another elder who also laughed continued, the tiger clan was a clan that prioritized strength. They would submit if the person who became their master was stronger and could defeat their clan chief. But if that person was weaker than them, don't expect to make them loyal.

I asked, my voice neutral. The man bowed his head slightly. "My name is Alex, Alpha," he said, his voice deep. "I'm a native of another pack, but I heard of the riches and strength of the Golden Claw pack, so I decided to reside here. I'm an orphan, and I have no one." I studied him, trying to read between the lines. There was something about him that didn't sit right with me, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Leah's eyes met mine, and I saw the silent plea there. I decided to agree to let him help me, if only for Leah's sake.

"That's why I contacted Jonathan Adams." I froze and everything else instantly disappeared from my mind. Jonathan Adams? Did he just say Jonathan Adams? My eyes widened at the name. The Jonathan Adams? The current patriarch of the Adams Clan? The legendary warrior clan whose stories every child grew up hearing? The man who had personally defeated three rogue Alphas during the Border Wars? The warrior who supposedly tracked an enemy through three countries using nothing but scent traces? That Jonathan Adams? I suddenly felt like an excited child. The Adams Clan wasn't royalty and they weren't rulers. Yet among warriors, they were practically legends. Stories about them were told everywhere an

Whatever had riled him earlier must have left. We stared at each other silently for a few minutes, assessing each other. Friend or foe? Cats never really got along with wolves. Not that there were wars over it; we just never really liked the way the other smelled. His being on pack lands willingly told much about his loyalties to this house and clan. “What’s your name, cat?” I asked to break the silent spell on us. My name is Moriko. What’s yours, dog? He extenuated the last word while flicking his tail strongly. Ooh, I’m getting under his skin.

I watch him pass me and note the lettering on the back of his cut. Nightmare Warriors.
