It shatters the illusion completely and makes the whole thing feel like a poorly labeled original story.

Another major hurdle is the pacing. I’ve read fics where the summary promises an epic political intrigue, but the first ten chapters are just the characters getting coffee and having meandering internal thoughts about their hair. Conversely, some try to cram a three-book arc into five thousand words, so relationships form in a paragraph and world-ending threats are resolved with a shrug. Both leave me feeling either bored or utterly lost, with no emotional payoff to anchor the journey.

The world of fanfiction is a wild, untamed frontier where creativity knows no bounds, and sometimes that leads to truly bizarre creations. One that still haunts my memory is a crossover between 'My Little Pony' and 'The Walking Dead,' where Twilight Sparkle becomes a zombie-hunting badass wielding a magical shotgun. The sheer absurdity of pastel-colored ponies decapitating walkers with rainbows had me equal parts horrified and fascinated. It somehow managed to blend gore with friendship lessons, culminating in a scene where Pinkie Pie baked zombie cupcakes—because why not?

Then there’s the infamous 'My Immortal,' a 'Harry Potter' fanfic so legendarily terrible it’s become a cult classic. The protagonist, Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way, is a self-insert goth vampire who wears fishnets to Hogwarts and has a feud with Draco Malfoy’s hair gel. The grammar is atrocious, the plot nonsensical, and yet it’s weirdly compelling in its trainwreck glory. It feels like reading a middle schooler’s diary after they binge-read 'Twilight' and listened to too much My Chemical Romance. I’ve never laughed so hard at something that wasn’t meant to be funny.
