I asked, tilting my head to the other end of the field. “Those five have been called a few names. The more polite one is the Groomed Hunters.” Meg says “The what?” I asked, laughing and trying not to spit my mouth full of water at April. April looks at me with a grin on her face and explains. “They are a group of girls whose parents are high-ranking warriors of the pack. Their mothers have ‘groomed’ them to hunt and attract a higher rank, like our boys over there, Gamma, Beta or Alpha.”

one of the nameless warriors told us. “ Not a problem.” Clayton said, handing them our driver’s licenses before continuing. “ I am Alpha Clayton Winters and this is my Beta Nova Winfred we are from the Ash Wood pack. We are here to get our pack registered with the council.” The two warriors gave me an odd look before the second warrior asked, “She’s your Beta? Doesn’t seem like a proper job for a pretty little thing like her if you ask me.” I looked at him with a glare before saying, “ First of all a he has a name and it’s Nova not pretty little thing.Secondly I can assure you my vagina has never gotten in the way of me doing my job. Thirdly no one asked for your opinion.”

Specklewing, a tortoiseshell she-cat, asked. She was the last cat to receive her warrior name at the gorge. The other apprentices were jealous of Specklewing since she had received her warrior name, but they refused to show it. Birdkit knew that they likely resented Emberstar for leaving the gorge in the first place. She couldn't necessarily blame them for wanting to have their warrior names before they left the gorge. It doesn't matter where we receive our warrior names, a small voice silently reminded her. As long as we receive them and protect the Clan at all costs.

TAWNY 4 MONTHS EARLIER For weeks we trained the Cambiador warriors. Taking a page out of MacTire’s book and splitting the warriors into five groups. Alpha, Beta, and Delta platoons. The other two platoons were named Gamma divisions. They were the warriors that would stay behind and protect the Kingdom’s capital. Then there were the new recruits, the younger werecats - the Zeta team. It was their job to act as enforcers in emergencies until they came of age or moved up to the gamma divisions.

I answered shortly, not giving her much to work with. She seemed to pick up on it, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Do you have a code name?" she asked, her curiosity growing. "Umm, yes." Shit. If she asks me what it is, what do I say? I was a lead warrior, but I wasn’t a ranked member. Why the hell did I lie just now? I was confused by my own behavior. "Can I know what it is?" she asked cautiously, her voice soft but eager. "Umm, usually it’s… Delta."

"I see rudeness runs in the Warrior's family." Rhychard's mother tilted her head to stare up at him. "Warrior? You make these little men call you Warrior? That's kind of…arrogant, isn't it?" Rhychard sighed as he set the casserole dish on the table. "Trust me, it wasn't something I wanted. I kind of got stuck with the title." "Hey, can ye be a wee bit quieter?" Drimzie called out from in front of the TV. "The gorilla has Gilligan in his clutches."

“You give off strong ‘pretends' he doesn't like cats but secretly has a 'favorite’ energy.” “I don’t even like cats.” “You do,” Jamie says, way too confidently. Hanna nods, dead serious. “And you’d name it something very proper. Like… Winston.” Grayson blinks at her. “Why Winston?” She shrugs. “It feels right.” Jamie loses it, laughing. “Winston Knight. That’s it. That’s the cat.” I laugh with him, nearly spilling my drink. “Stop, I can actually see it.” Grayson shakes his head, but there’s no real resistance in it. “You’re all ridiculous.”

I watch him pass me and note the lettering on the back of his cut. Nightmare Warriors.

Followed by a Gamma, whose main function is to protect her. Then follows Mathew, yeah, the name appears in her mind because he is currently holding that title (the head of the warriors) and because she is so proud of him. Next follows the warriors and then the Elders, then the Omegas and, finally, at the bottom of the ranks in the werewolf world, are the Rogues.

I could feel her anxiety as she met my hard gaze with her wide eyes. Nobody knows my wolf's name except for me. They call him Invictus, Death Claws but that's not his real name. Only I know what is he called. Usually, alphas don't reveal their wolves' names as revealing them can make us susceptible to evil magics. The seasoned witches only need a name to cast a spell on. It's not a law but a necessary precaution.
