The First Wolf I loved
The entire staff—every last server, cook, dishwasher, and delivery runner—stood in the cramped kitchen with wide smiles, colorful streamers in hand, and a large chocolate-frosted cake on the stainless-steel counter.
A cake.
At six-thirty in the morning.
“What—?” My voice cracked embarrassingly. “What is all this?”
Tyler practically bounced. “Welcome back, Boss!”
The cake had WELCOME BACK MONA! written in bright blue icing—with a tiny, somewhat misshapen drawing of a wolf paw underneath. I snorted when I saw it.
“Please tell me you didn’t draw that,” I said to Joe, who appeared from behind a stack of baking trays.
“I’ll have you know I tried my best,” he said with mock dignity.
