Ever since she’d set up a dog house on the porch, he’d been spending more and more time out there. After switching everything off and locking up, she stepped outside the house, the porch light humming above her. Then came a sharp, echoing hoot from the darkness. Startled, she turned, seeing the white owl perched on the railing like it had been waiting for her. Its feathers looked almost silver in the light, and its big round eyes blinked once, then twice, locking onto her. Arah’s lips curved into a smile. “Hey, it’s you. It’s been a while, huh?”

My only response was a grimace. An hour later, we were eating in my room in front of the tv, Nick and Livie devouring a four-cheese pizza, a suggestion made by the her, while I... well, I ate grilled chicken.
