I leaned in to place a gentle kiss on his lips, a silent affirmation of my gratitude for his understanding and patience.

By making us more completely the people we already were. I think that might be the whole point of everything.

We lived simply, not because we had no means to live otherwise, but because we had learned that luxury without purpose is empty. We found joy in the ordinary things: sharing a meal after a long day, talking over tea, working together in the garden, walking through the streets of the city we loved. We valued each other’s company more than any fine possession. We did not try to impress anyone. We were free to be exactly who we were.
