LISA’S POV A sharp, piercing sound split through my skull, metal grinding against bone. I tried to open my eyes. Bad idea. Pain slammed me back into darkness, throbbing harder with each attempt, like my brain was punishing me for daring to wake up. Something wasn’t right. I couldn’t name it, but my chest tightened like my body already knew what my mind couldn’t remember. Beep. Beep. Beep. The sound grew clearer, syncing with the biting scent of antiseptic and the scratch of stiff sheets beneath my fingers. Not heaven. Not even close.

The signature of the Ash-born. Gods, I should be terrified, but I'm not. Because they’re not attacking. They’re not reaching for me with hungry claws or baring fangs stained with malice. They’re singing. It’s not a melody in any sense I understand. It’s grief made sound, sorrow given voice. A mourning that shreds the air and tears at the fabric of reality itself. I thought him a little out of his senses when he'd first began talking to me. He rubbed his forehead, closing his eyes. "The come down is always the worst," he mumbled. It was my turn to raise an eyebrow at him this time. He nodded at my shackles. "They use runes on you. They mute my abilities with chemicals. Gets me high in the process. Now, it's wearing off and everything is setting back in. They'll sneak up here any second and shoot me up again, even though my abilities aren't a danger to anyone but myself in this state."

The love in their eyes made me feel that this trip through the human world had been more than worth it. I slowly closed my eyes. Right before they shut completely, I had a strange feeling and turned my head toward the narrow glass window in the door. Through it, I saw a handsome face with red eyes and trembling lips. It was Cole. My vision, my sense of touch, and my sense of smell began to fade as I waited for death to take me. Seconds before I lost my hearing too, I heard people shouting my name from all around. In the midst of all the noise, I caught one voice that wasn't loud at all. It should've been clear and cool, but right then it was hoarse. Its owner called out, "Izzy."

Over the next three days, my newly-registered email inbox started getting bombarded by tons of emails. The subject of the emails ranged from “Urgent Call for Help” to “Jansen, Let’s Talk”. They finally evolved to “I’m Sorry” and “Please Come Back”. Texts and calls from unfamiliar numbers kept coming to my new phone number. I looked coldly at the notifications flooding my screen. “Jansen! Please answer my calls! I was wrong!” “I’ve driven Samuel away! I fired him!” “I can’t lose that project! I’m begging you, I’ll agree to anything you ask for!”

The magical solution is added, and the mixture starts to emit a gentle hum, like the quiet buzzing of a harp string.
