The Weight of Staying

It was barely a word—just air and pain. She barely noticed.
Her whole body felt distant, as if she’d left it behind at the threshold of good news. She read the sentence again.
Each reading chipped away at disbelief, carving reality from hope. Then again.
She mouthed the word, shaping it with silent lips. Accepted.
It seemed to pulse on the screen, a beacon of possibility. She had been accepted into the master’s program.
She stared at the phrase, letting it settle into her bones, heavier and brighter than she’d imagined. The rest of the letter blurred beneath her thumb.
