“Lana, they’re lying! They can’t—” Before she could finish, the two male supporters stepped back and gave low, guttural whistles. From the deeper shadows of the trees, three pairs of phosphorescent green eyes appeared. Shadow Wolves. Massive, spectral creatures with fur that drank the light, more spirit than flesh, tamed only by dark magic and raw meat. They padded forward, silent as smoke, forming a deadly triangle around us. Their low growls vibrated in the pit of my stomach. Bella pressed against me, a terrified whimper escaping her lips. “It’s over,” she breathed. “They’ve got the wolves… the whole clan is watching…”

"Seventeen wolves. Burned alive." Araya's chest tightens. Seventeen dead. The first casualties of a war not yet officially declared. "Were there survivors?" Araya asks. "Anyone who saw the attackers?" "One scout. Badly burned but alive. He said..." Lyra hesitates. "He said shadows attacked. Living darkness. With crimson eyes and fangs that tore through stone." Vampires. Has to be. Their kind can move through shadows. Attack from darkness. Kill without ever fully materializing.

The moonlight that had been streaming through my window was gone, blocked by something that moved. Shadows. Living shadows with burning red eyes. Six massive wolves made of pure darkness stood in my room, their forms rippling like smoke. They didn’t breathe. Didn’t make sound. Just stared at me with those horrible red eyes, dripping malevolence. My scream caught in my throat as the nearest one lunged. I rolled off the bed, hitting the floor hard. The shadow wolf’s claws raked through my pillow, shredding it. Feathers exploded into the air.

Darkness cracked his neck to the side, releasing his shadows so they could play. The moment Alpha Derrick moved, Darkness's shadows caught him by the leg, and flung him away. Alpha Derrick's Wolf hit the barricade with a loud thump, before he could regain himself, shadows wrapped around him, squeezing him tightly, consuming his darkness. The wolf roared, biting the shadows, trying to get them off him but he bit nothing but air.

The only thing that mattered was bringing Rayne back. I materialized at the edge of the chasm, peering down into its seemingly bottomless depths. The darkness was absolute, a void that swallowed all light and hope. I extended a Wolf claw, preparing to slice my palm, when an unsettling chill crept over me, signaling the arrival of The Shadows. They emerged from every direction, and none, their dark tendrils writhing like living serpents.

Cal added, but I still couldn’t comprehend what he was saying. A werewolf… that could die from the sun? What is this? A joke? “Is he a vampire?” I blurted out my thoughts and realized it was too late to take it back. I got a snort from Cal. “I always tell him how much cooler that would be, but no, he’s not. It’s the Dark Shadow. It feeds off him or something, so he can only live at night. As soon as the sun rises or sets, he needs to be in total darkness or he’s, to put it as simply as possible, going to die.”

What? S shifted into his wolf and bared his teeth at Nat. His wolf was huge, and dusty grey, but not as big as Carl’s Beta wolf. The other Shadows surged in around them, their sheer numbers more terrifying than anything else. “Shadows, stop!” Hunter snapped. “There is nothing here that concerns you. No-one moves without my permission.”

Shadow Wielders Institute of Knowledge changed dramatically the night after Dark paid a visit. Not only had he been able to kill a lot of Shadowests, but he was also able to freeze most of them. Michelle would never forget the terror Dark had left. When her shadow saved her, she was able to spot the spears hitting all over the field, freezing even the meadows. It’s as though the thunders were probing the spears to do more damage as it groaned ever loudly.

It was quiet for a few minutes and he finally said, “Tilly and I have absolutely no secrets. People like you and me … we can’t be with just anyone. It’s either one night stands, fake short term relationships or nothing. You don’t just find a Tilly on every corner. A woman that will accept you, that if you are totally honest with her … won’t be afraid of you. I never had someone to … to help me. To direct me, and it damn near killed me. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I call it my dark shadow … it’s a part of me, but it’s a part of me I can mostly keep hidden, that I can control.

The silence was deafening, broken only by the sound of their footsteps and the occasional distant howl. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows, its eyes glowing with malevolent intent. It was a rogue werewolf, its body twisted and corrupted by dark magic. The creature let out a chilling growl, and more shadowy figures appeared, surrounding the clan members. "We've been ambushed," Seraphina hissed. "Prepare for battle!"
