I yearned to know if she thought I was useless—just dead weight dragging her down… However, I didn’t want to make a scene, and I didn’t want to drag an uninvolved man into the mess of my marriage. I turned to leave and accidentally knocked over a nearby trash can. Clang! The loud crash made both of them turn at the same time. Our eyes met. The burrito wrapper slipped from Alisha’s hand and dropped lazily to the ground. "Kayden?" The embarrassment of being caught hit me all at once. I wanted to disappear into the pavement. Nevertheless, I straightened up anyway, forcing a calm smile. "What a coincidence, babe. You two… talking business?"

They stepped inside, holding up their torchlights, only to be met with a room filled with garbage. The stench was unbearable, thick and suffocating. Amidst the filth lay a worn-out, grimy mat—it had been my bed. The only possession I had was a tattered doll I'd brought from home. The doll stood out in the squalor. Its age was apparent; the fabric was faded and patched in several places. Yet, it was clear the doll had once been cherished, lovingly repaired by its owner.

My face stayed blank as I tossed it straight into the trash. "That one was hand-knit by my mom. This piece of crap doesn't even come close." Elmer frowned when he saw the scarf in the bin, then sat down beside me. "I know. But the dead won't come back, Moira. What's gone is gone. Risa didn't mean any harm, and it was you who pissed her off first, wasn't it? Come on, don't be mad." He reached out like he always did, trying to pat my head.

When I finally hit the ground, it didn't hurt. I landed on a pile of something soft and rustling. I opened my eyes. I wasn't in the black liquid anymore. I was standing in a city made of **trash**. But it wasn't normal trash. It was paper trash. Massive skyscrapers built from crumpled scripts. Streets paved with discarded Polaroids. The sky was a flat, dull grey, like a screen that had been turned off but was still glowing with static.
