“Don’t worry, babe. Everyone looks scarier than they are.”
“That’s not exactly comforting.”
“Okay,” she concedes with a smirk, “they’re scarier than they look, but they won’t touch us.”
“Touch us?” I echo. “Rosie, who exactly are these people?”
Her smile falters, just a second. Then she lowers her voice, leaning in. “Promise you won’t freak out.”
“Rosie…”
“Promise.”
I sigh. “Fine. I promise.”
She glances around before saying, almost too casually, “My uncle has… ties.”
