For them, CMP felt less like a market and more like a small festival that never ended. Teenagers liked it even more. They came to hang out, to sit and read the latest novels and to lose themselves in stories that were no longer the same tired tales of noble heroes going to war while weak and sorrowful women waited endlessly at home. These stories were different. The worlds were wider, the characters stranger and braver in new ways, and the imagination behind them left teenagers starstruck. There were stories for children, for youth, for adults. All these stories that made people feel seen.

I deserved better, this stupid year was just kicking my ass. Young Adult fantasy is a thing...like a big deal, I noted reading through so interesting titles, but not the specific one I was looking for.

His mouth found the hollow of her throat as his fingers worked the laces of her corset… "Absolutely not." I snapped the book shut. "Dad, come on. It's not even that bad." "Not that bad?" I held the book up. "This is soft-core disguised as mystery." "It's a subplot. The main plot is the murder investigation." "I don't care if it's a footnote." I set the book on the coffee table, out of her reach. "You're fifteen. Too young for this garbage." She crossed her arms, leaning back against the cushions. "I'm almost sixteen. Not six."

Instead, he just sat there, waiting for her to process it and be able to talk—or at least breathe. “Uh… wh-what?” she stammered. “Yeah,” he said. “The marking ceremony happens during sex. That’s why the book wants you to be eighteen, I’m assuming. So that you’re an adult, or whatever.” Everly shook her head, and the ability to think and speak came flooding back to her. “But wasn’t that book written, like, four hundred years ago? Back then, people had babies when they were thirteen. Why would they care if I was eighteen before I had sex or not?”
