Every time I started to lose it, he was there—calm, steady, like he was holding my whole world together without even realizing it.
“How’s Ronald doing?” I asked as I stepped into Fred’s patient room. The sharp scent of medicine hit me instantly. Ronald lay motionless on the bed, his chest rising and falling so faintly it barely counted as breathing.
Fred looked up from his clipboard, adjusting his glasses. “He’s getting better. He stays awake longer before losing consciousness now. What’s causing it, though…” he sighed, “we still don’t know.”
I nodded, glancing at Ronald again. His face looked peaceful, but I knew better. The last time he woke up, he’d said something strange, something about
