If I thought he looked rough after the last attack, his current state is catastrophic. He strides to me, cupping my cheeks. The relief in his eyes is palpable, washing over his features. He pulls me into his bloodied chest, his arms locking around me as though he’s terrified I might vanish. His fists clutch the blanket covering me, his fingers digging into my skin. “Kane’s Beta, Mark is dead,” he murmurs. The words hit me like a blow, and something lodges in my throat. Serena—she must have felt it. The severed bond. My mind, already a storm, flares brighter.

She mostly hated me bringing up her sickness phase, so I chose to ignore it for today. “It was fine, but there will be no second date.” I quickly informed her, sighing. I was done letting them match me up. “Actually, there won’t be.” She lowered her cup slowly to look me in the eyes. “Did you watch the news? Mark was found dead this morning.” My fingers trembled, and a chilly feeling coursed through me. “How?” I quivered, fear consuming me, and she shrugged. “All they know is that he was killed.” Her voice was low. “Let’s be glad you weren't with him at that point. My chest caves in with the force of it, and I break completely, folding over him as the tears pour from my eyes and my hands shake violently.

My thoughts swirled as I stood in a daze. Thomas had been the Beta until his sudden death just a week after the death of Mark's father, the alpha. Were their deaths related? My eyes narrowed as I wondered, it would make logical sense to take out the Beta along with the alpha, wouldn't it? A chill crawled up my spine as I got to this point. “Are you okay, you look pale?” Mark's words snapped me out of my daze. “Yes.. yes I'm fine, just shocked,” I stammered, making up an excuse. “Who do you think it could be?” I asked, holding my breath.

Sebastian passes out from the shock. The doctor comes out and looks at Zachary and Sebastian huddled together. The Doctor looks at Sebastian and back at Temperance several times. “Alpha his mark is not gone,” the doctor and Zachary move Sebastian into the room with Temperance and the doctor closes the door. “How is this possible?” Zachary asks. “She must not be dead,” the doctor speaks slowly looking at Temperance. Both the doctor stare into her open chest. Her heart is still. “Come on baby girl, you can’t leave us now,” Zachary wills.

Despite the slow progress, one could visibly notice a difference. "Is it because of the mark?" Talon looked up at me, and the mark on my neck emitted a soft glow. I nodded and refocused on tending to Talon's wounds. After nearly fifteen more minutes, exhaustion overcame me, rendering me unable to activate my ability any longer. I weakly collapsed onto the bed. It was then that Talon's strong arms caught me. He gazed at me with affection, his eyes expressing a mix of delight, surprise, and even a touch of apology.
