Some rooms, once you've walked into them, simply do not have a door on the other side. I held my mother's hands and waited.

"Each door holds a truth. Some are small. Some are large enough to swallow you. You must pass through seven to reach the door behind the door. But be warned. Eliana looked at the twelve doors. Some were closed. Some were ajar. Some seemed to breathe. Door number three, painted a deep ocean blue, was rattling on its hinges. Door number eleven, black as a starless night, was weeping. The sound of it was a low, rhythmic sobbing that matched her own heartbeat. "Why seven?" she asked. "Why not all twelve?"

It was not remarkable to look at. That was, in itself, remarkable. Every other door on the third floor had the specific quality of doors that were not thought about, that were simply present because a corridor needed to terminate somewhere, the quality of genuine neglect. This door had that same quality but it was applied, was the deliberate presentation of a door that did not matter, and Daveson had been trained for long enough to know the difference between a thing that genuinely did not matter and a thing that had been made to look like it didn't.

The light is the same late-afternoon gold that filters through the windows at this hour, making everything look softer than it is. But the door to my room in the penthouse is not quite fully latched. I notice it from ten feet away. The gap is small — maybe a quarter inch — the kind of gap that happens when a door is pulled closed but not pushed all the way into the frame. She pointed to a narrow gap between the shelf and the wall. “It wasn’t like this before.” Marcus and Samuel pushed the heavy bookshelf aside. Hidden behind it was a plain wooden door. No handle. No keyhole. Only a carved symbol. An unbroken silver circle. Elias stared at it.
