Afterward, Chloe turned to Keena. “Did you tell them?”
Keena smiled. “I didn’t have to. They sensed it, just like I did.”
Hunter jolted awake, the force of whatever had hit him still ringing in his bones. He scrambled to his feet, sprinting back to where they’d been. The bayou was empty, silent except for the hum of crickets. “Chloe!” he roared, his voice tearing through the night. Nothing. He dropped to his knees, fists slamming into the dirt. “No, no, no! This isn’t real! Nothing’s changed, Chloe!” he shouted, desperation clawing at his throat. “I’ll never let go. I love you. Never,” he choked out, collapsing forward, his face pressed into the ground. “Never let go.”
