Her cheeks were flushed with excitement as she held a green piece of paper and said, "Mom, for my wish this year, I want to give today's forgiveness coupon back to Uncle Alex. "He went to help someone, but he still remembered my birthday. I shouldn't have torn up the coupon." The fireworks went off precisely at the stroke of midnight. But the words spelled out by those fireworks pierced both mine and Kimmy's eyes like daggers. "Dearest Pearl, happy 5th birthday, love from Daddy Alexander."

Fuck, I hated those words. “My mommy is taking us out to lunch,” she rumbled looking at Chance and his mother. “Want to come? She got a new job.” My Saoirse thought that explained it all. “You can bring your mommy too.” I had to swallow my laugh. I couldn’t picture Chance ever referring to Mrs. Macklemore as Mommy. “Thank you for the invite,” Chance answered, his expression relaxed while his lips curved into an amused smile. “It’s so nice of you to invite us.”

"That, my friend, is how you do it. When you find a good woman, make sure she's your number one priority in bed, and things like that will just happen." Chance smiles at me and smacks his toy in excitement, making it light up again.

“Oh wow, you don't look like someone with bad luck she commented and took a seat beside me, ignoring the curious looks she attracted from others. “Bad luck?” I questioned frowning, wondering what she meant by “bad luck” “Yeah, that's what the grown-ups say” She shrugged like it was no big deal but it really bothered me “they say that bad things happen when people we don't know leave their pack to live here” “So...” I trailed off, uncertain where this conversation went. “Luna!” I heard a woman howled . She was probably her mother, she was tall, brunette, and dressed in a dark blue dress that clung tightly around her curves.

Time for the meeting Seth and I are as prepared as we can be. There are no fancy presentation slides or numbers to dazzle them with. Cassy carried on, full of excitement, unaware of what I had noticed. “Yes! And of course, you’re going as Mike’s date again! For the first time, we’ll both be at the event of the year. I’ll have to work, of course, but that’s just a small detail.” Elizabeth’s fingers froze around her glass.
