For a second, silence stretched between them like a tripwire, sharp enough to draw blood. The two women stared at Dick as if he’d just suggested asking a crocodile for swimming lessons. Meanwhile, the bored husky snored near the fireplace, blissfully unaware that the fate of several billion dollars—and a couple of lives—was hanging in the balance.
Outside, the wind howled like a hungry wolf, sending brittle leaves skittering across the snow. Somewhere out there, a dark figure lingered at the tree line, melting into the shadows, unseen and very cold.
