“It was Alexandro’s new bride. Serena. She saw me. In the water. I didn’t know she was there. I didn’t think anyone—” “Are we going to be in trouble?” she finished, looking up at him. Valerian’s lips curved in a faint smile. “Why should I be? Just because someone knows my wife is a siren doesn’t mean I’m afraid of them. His wife is just a human.” His eyes softened. “Mine is a siren.” That last sentence made her cheeks flush. “But…” she hesitated again, twisting her fingers. “I don’t think she’s just human.”

Despite the salt and pepper grey hair, Connor’s movie star looks make him seem ageless in a way that had me thinking he would have still been just a touch too young to fight in that battle. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to.” He says. “I may have some additional insights that your parents or Leader Bruno don’t, and given how close this guy,” he says, motioning to the deceased human still lying on the ground, “was found to my pack lands, I’d like to be a part of thinking through next steps. Have you contacted COWS yet?”

“You never can tell. You can try.” I faced him. Now this was getting out of hand. “Dennis, I ask again, whose side are you on?” “I am on the side of my Alpha and Luna.” “Everything is ready, Arthur...” Jeremy walked in interrupting us. I glared at Dennis who grinned and headed in. I nodded and made to start heading out. “But, someone is here to see you...” “I thought I am off duties for now...” “It’s Maxwell.” I halted, “Maxwell?”

He plays the footage from the camera flash he got from the lab. We carefully watch everything in the video. Alpha Tate’s wolf wasn’t comfortable seeing it again, he’s growling and radiating anger energy from his body, but we had to watch it. It’s the only way to know who these scientists are. “There.” He points at the screen. Oliver pauses the video, taking it back a little and stops at the face of one of the doctors. “Isn’t that Justin’s father?” Oliver asks, staring at the screen intensely. He does look exactly like Justin though.

“This door has a shock countermeasure—I mess up, we’re all fried.” William moved to her side, eyes scanning the corridor. “Lily, cover our left. Adrian, right flank.” Footsteps echoed from the far hall, followed by a voice crackling over the loudspeakers—smooth, amused, and unmistakable. “William Thomas… still chasing ghosts,” Leonard drawled. “You’ve brought quite the entourage. I almost feel honored.” William’s jaw tightened. “Show yourself, Leonard.” A dark laugh. “Oh, I will. But I’m curious—how long will you keep trusting the wrong people?”
