When she smiled at whatever joke he whispered, my chest tightened.
That should be me. That’s always been me.
I forced myself to look away, focusing on the view outside the window. The mountains of WillowRidge stretched endlessly, their beauty doing little to calm the storm inside me. My fists clenched at my sides as I tried to ground myself, but the sound of her laughter pulled me back, like a magnet I couldn’t escape.
I turned just in time to see Adam’s fingers graze hers as he passed her a pen. It was such a small thing innocuous to anyone else—but to me, it was unbearable. My jaw tightened, my vision narrowing as the fire inside me surged.
