She hailed a taxi and headed straight to the airport. In the distance, fire raged against the backdrop of the star-lit skies.

Halfway through it, he paused his hands and looked at me. “I think I’ll be able to ruin you completely this time, Isaac. Charlie will not want you back. I’ll make sure of it.” I studied the patient’s status and said menacingly, “I don’t want to argue with you about this drivel. The patient is counting on us to survive. Continue the surgery now!” What I did not expect was for Zachary to swipe the scalpel across the patient’s lungs a couple of times. The first cut dug in very deeply.

At most, he could scroll through their old chats and feel sad for himself. Sean was not the type to wallow. Sitting on the plane, scrolling through old messages and crying quietly was far beneath someone like him. As a man used to winning, he refused to behave like a loser. This time with your core engaged.” Outside, Red climbed the metal stairs to the roof. The night wrapped around him like a tight coat. He lit a cigarette with one hand, the other buried deep in his pocket, and stared out at the city, trying to shake off the foul taste of the bouncers’ voices. . . .

I close my eyes, unable to watch the ground fall away, unable to comprehend how my life has taken such an unexpected and horrifying turn.
