I summoned my wings, and red wings flapped on my back as my body rose in the air and out of the hell of fire. Lucien’s eyes widened at the sight of me as he staggered backward and sat up. He built a barrier between him and me, but I watched as he inched backward on his ass as I slowly walked toward him. My hands were raised with my palms up, and fire emitted from them, but in between them, shards of big thorn-like spikes were dancing around.

I hadn’t understood what she meant until now. Maybe she knew. Maybe the fire was never meant to destroy me. The moon slides out from behind the clouds. For a second, the ashes around me glow faintly, stirred by a soft gust. They spiral upward, forming the faint outline of wings. Phoenix wings. I blink, and they’re gone. The world feels too still. Give in. I closed my eyes and felt him deep inside me. I felt him clawing away in there, and I let go, dropping whatever barrier was holding him back. A ring of fire spread across my eyes. It was a perfect, terrifying blend of us. It had Dante’s lethal, massive frame and his predator’s stance, but from its spine erupted a pair of wings that were an exact, burning replica of mine. They weren't made of "Void-Lead" or "Obsidian-Gold." They were made of Primal Fire, a deep, arterial red that seemed to drink the light from the room.

A wisp of fire slipped out of an embrasure and, growing and spreading wings, transformed into a giant blazing bird. Temujin made an uppercut and the fire bird shadowed his movements by first hovering like a crest affronté under the enemy ship’s bow and then streaking upwards with a raptorial screech and a fiery roar. Next, Temujin spread out all his fingers as he thrust his hand forward. In response, his red bird skimmed over the enemy ship’s deck and the pirates scampered. Sasha and Aki watched with fingers crossed as the fire bird glided towards the junco’s foremast. They couldn’t see everything but it appeared as though the fiery red color started to fade and turn into a cool blue. Sasha

“Why? Is it because of-“ Movement behind him caught her attention and she saw huge wings in the sky, right before the sky exploded with fire. She didn’t think, she pushed him to the ground, covering his body with hers as the fire rained down on them.

Then—an explosion. The fire surged, twisting unnaturally, moving with purpose, as though it were alive. A wave of heat slammed into me. I turned my body, shielding the child as I rolled out of the way, the flames licking at my back. Pain flared, sharp and searing. My wolf howled in agony, but I clenched my teeth. I could heal. The child couldn’t. The fire withdrew as quickly as it had come. I forced myself to my feet, gripping the girl tightly in my arms.
