This is bad, really bad and I take in deep breaths trying to kill this urge to fuck her again and again. Tomorrow night is the Red moon and it’s only going to get worse. We put the young women and children behind that door not only because it’s dangerous but also because it’s an X-rated scene under the moon. All un-mated wolves are in a sex frenzy and many, if not all she-wolves get pregnant from tonight.

I grabbed my bag and started climbing. The more I climbed, the colder the air got, and my breath came out in white clouds. Snow covered the ground up here even though it was spring everywhere else. Guards appeared before I reached the gate. Three huge wolves in human form blocked my path. "Private territory," the biggest one said. "Turn around." "I'm Valentina Moonfang Winterfell. Luna of the Winterfell Pack. I am here to see my father-in-law, Hunter Knox Winterfell." They looked at each other.

“Your patient is waiting, Dr Winter.” My legs grow heavier as I force myself to step into Jayda’s bedroom. It is beautiful and a little bit too flashy for my taste. But it speaks Jayda, and from all the decor and fancy things, I’m sure Xavier spends a lot to soothe his wife. “Dr Winter meet my luna, Jayda.” He introduces. “And my love, meet Dr Winter. She’ll be your personal physician for the next moon season.”

She seemed to be calming down, a bit anyway. "The Wolf Moon was named by the indigenous peoples of this continent hundreds of years ago. They called it that because in the winter they heard the wolf packs howling around their villages. Little did they know the full moon in the darkest part of winter held great power for us." She seemed to forget her fears for the moment as they spoke. Rhys thought maybe it would be best to continue the discussion in private. "Why don't we talk about everything that will happen tomorrow so it won't seem so foreign to you." He held his hand out, waiting for her to take hold.

He really brings out the worst in me. Just when I thought that we were getting along well. I keep my head low because it’s still light out, and anyone could see me. My hair is too bright, and I forgot to bring the hoodie along. I do wear the coat, though. It’s quite cold out. I think the season is starting to change, and it’ll be winter soon. I used to love winter. Now, I don’t really care about it. “How far till we get there?” Paola asks him. I’m glad she did, because I had been meaning to. It’s better if I limit my conversations with him, though. I don’t like unpredictable people, and Pollux is unpredictable as heck.

While the plant provides power for most of the state, it does not require that many employees to run it so the town remains small. Amaris threw off the plain white sheets and rolled out of the twin bed that lay nestled against the wall and in the corner of the room. When she was a child, Amaris would push the bed back against the wall every night so that she could lay at the foot of her bed and look out her window at the moon. There was nothing more beautiful than the sight of the full moon in all her glory.

She tried to sound powerful, but her voice was shaking as she muttered, “Leave me alone.” Leo grinned more broadly. “Why would I do that now? I need something that you have. The essence of an eclipse.” As the reality dawned, Winter’s blood froze. Deep within her, she sensed something strong and alien—the life-saving essence that Maxine had given her. Leo extended his hand. “If you come quietly, this might not hurt too much.” Winter ran away. As the rain increased once again, she raced faster than she ever imagined she could, the muddy earth slipping underfoot. The wind roared in her ears as branches tore at her face and arms, but she dared not turn around.

We turn at the same time to see Luka stepping out from the forest, his gold-tinted curls blowing about his face, his brown eyes wide with wonder at the sight of the river. He walks past, still not seeing us. Darius and I look at each other, then scramble up to follow him. Luka stops at the top of the river embankment. He passes his hand over his eyes. When he drops his hand again, he opens his eyes and they are a milky grey colour. The glow disappears from the sky and in the darkness a full moon rises. Not just any moon. I recognize this moon. So pale, so clear, it appears as if behind a layer of ice. The first full moon of the new year. The Wolf Moon.

I start on the whiskey first. I plan to drive straight through and make it home by nightfall. The earth turns closer towards summer, making the days longer, and the nights shorter. For most wolves, winter is our favorite season because we get to spend the most time with the moon. While spring signifies new life to humans, for our kind, winter is the breath of fresh air that rejuvenates us. To be born at night and winter, is considered a double blessing from the moon.
